Vincent Plant Pot Cover Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Getting pretty plant pot covers can be sometimes expensive (at least for my taste 🙂 ). But you can create your own attractive modern style plant pot cover with crochet and some leftover yarn! The Vincent Plant Pot Cover Crochet pattern gives you the blueprint to do just that.

The Weird Crochet Stitch

This unique plant pot cover uses a stitch that I discovered while playing around with some yarn in the round. I’m calling it a “modified spiked half double crochet”. Is that the real name? I have no idea, I’ve searched and searched and my GoogleFu has run out. I cannot find anything that uses this stitch, so if you know that there is a special name and have seen it somewhere let me know.

I have directions below with the pattern on how to do this stitch, it isn’t complicated, if you know how to do a half double crochet and a single crochet then you’ll be able to do this pretty easily. If you are still a bit baffled there is also a video tutorial that has how to work this stitch along with the entire pattern for the plant pot cover.

The Yarn (And my irritation)

To make this plant pot cover I used Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn. This has been discontinued (don’t get me started on this) by Bernat and now rereleased as Bernat Maker Yarn (it looks like the same exact thing just different colors).

The colors in the pictures are the “old” Home Dec Yarn and still appear to be available on Amazon at least in the U.S.

And like always, Yarnspirations website (which so far appears to be the only place to get the new Maker yarn) is ALWAYS out of stock…… (again, don’t get me started on this, I will rant foooooorever). If someone from Yarnspirations is reading this, fix your inventory problems. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop discontinuing good yarns.

Alternative Yarn – Use your scraps!

The Bernat Home Dec/Maker yarn is a bulky #5 yarn.

So you can use another bulky yarn or you can also use 2 strands of a #4 medium-weight yarn held together, which can be a great option if you’re making small pot covers and have some leftover scraps you need to use up.

Vincent Crochet Plant Pot Cover in all 3 Sizes

Notes:

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • The pattern is worked all in one piece in the round.
  • The initial chain at the start of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • The special stitch for this pattern has pictures to help you along with this stitch, but it is highly encouraged to check out the video tutorial if you are still having issues on working this stitch.
  • This written pattern is a guide on building the cover, the exact amount of rounds you will need will depend on the plant pot you want to use for this project. You might only need 3 rounds on the bottom, or you might need 8 depending on how big your plant pot is.
  • The height will also vary, just repeat the repeat round to build up the sides until you have reached the height you would like.

Materials:

  • #5 bulky weight yarn (the exact amount will vary based on the plant pot you are using)
  • Estimated yarn usage based on models made during testing:

Foundation Chain:  ch 4, sl st 1st and last chain to join and form a ring.

Round 1: ch 1, hdc 8x into the ring, sl st to join 1st and last st (8 sts)

Round 2: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), hdc in 2x in each stitch all the way around, sl st to join 1st and last st (16 sts)

Round 3: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), * hdc in the next st, hdc 2x in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to join 1st and last st (24 sts)

Round 4: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), * hdc 2x in the next st, hdc once in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * all around, sl st to join 1st and last st (32 sts)

Round 5: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), * hdc once in each of the next 3 sts, hdc 2x in the next st, repeat from * all around, sl st to join 1st and last st (40 sts)

Round 6: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), * hdc 2x in the next st, hdc once in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * all around, sl st to join 1st and last st (48 sts)

Round 8: ch 1, (starting in the 1st st), * hdc 2x in the next st, hdc once in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * all around, sl st to join 1st and last st (64 sts)

(if you need a wider base keep alternating the last 2 rounds and increasing the number of stitches between the hdc2x by 1, so Round 9 would be hdc 1x in the next 7 sts then hdc 2x and repeat, etc)

Body:

(stitch count for the rounds of the body will match the amount of stitches for the last round of the base you completed)

Round 1: ch 1, (working in the 3rd lp and starting in the 1st st), sc in each st all the way around, sl st to join 1st and last st
