Lounging Pet Bed Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

We go through a lot of testing of cat beds in our house and one problem we always seem to run into is what we get are too small and too tall.

I have a “robust” cat (don’t tell her that <.<) that is also a tripod so small beds are not good and tall sides are not good either. That is why I made a crochet cat mat for her a few years ago.

In addition to her, my little orange demon, I mean cat….. doesn’t seem to like anything with high sides unless it is made of cardboard. So I wanted to make something that would accommodate them both and came up with the Lounging Pet Bed Pattern.

Lounging Round Pet Bed in Green

The Yarn

To make this pet bed I used Bernat Maker Home Dec Yarn. This has been discontinued (my biggest yarn pet peeve) by Bernat and is now rereleased as Bernat Maker Yarn (it looks like the same thing just different colors).

The colors in the pictures are the “old” Home Dec Yarn and still appear to be available on Amazon at least in the U.S.

The Stitch

This pattern also uses a new stitch that I also used on this crochet plant pot cover. I have called this stitch a Modified Spiked Half Double Crochet Stitch. It involves having the hook go through both your current working stitch and the stitch one row below.

Pictures are included below along with written directions on the stitch in the Special Stitches Section. The video tutorial for this pet bed also shows you how to do the stitch.

The Sides

The sides of this pet bed are supposed to look scalloped and not perfectly rounded. So no need to fear, you don’t have to block this or anything 🙂

The Sizes

There are 2 sizes that this pattern is written for, a small and a large. The small is about 12″ across the inside on the bottom and the large is 15″ across.

While the small will fit a cat, I can say among the 3 cats in my house they prefer the large, even though only one of them actually needs that size.

If you want the smaller size, when doing the base pieces you can stop at Round 14, for the large continue on through Round 17.

The large size of the Lounging Pet bed with a cat inside only taking up about half the space.
Even the “Fluffy” cat doesn’t take up all of the space in the large bed, but prefers this size.

Notes:

  • This crochet pattern is written in US terms.
  • This pattern is worked in the round.
  • To make the cat bed, 2 bottom pieces are made and then connected using a round of half double crochet stitches, from there the body is worked up in the round.
  • The initial chain at the start of each round does not count as a stitch.
  • There are 2 sizes for the cat bed: small and large. The small size is 12” (~30.5 cm) across on the inside and the larger size is 15” (~38 cm) across on the inside.
  • The sides are 3.5” (~9 cm) tall.
  • You can adjust the height of the sides by adding more repeats of row 3.
